Creative Resumes

Although not appropriate for every job application, this format is sometimes warranted. Applying for a job in marketing? A creative resume can show off your ability to sell something: in this case, yourself. Interested in working as a graphic designer? A creative resume can show off your graphic design skills.

Here are some careers where a creative resume might be a good fit:

**Caution: Even in creative fields, some companies place more value on a traditional resume. As well, if you are applying for a job in a very conservative field, or to a company with a more traditional culture, use creative touches sparingly. Know your audience! 


Regardless of how creative or unique your resume design is, the content must be easy to find and logically organized, following the guidelines of The 4 Essential Elements of a Good Resume.


  • great way to show off your design skills and stand out from other applicants
  • opportunity to brand yourself
  • easier to make than you think (change font, accent with colour that expresses you but is respectful of the position)
  • not suitable for all industries
  • can be distracting if the design lacks consistency and moderation
  • may not get past Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) when applying online
  • some coloured font or paper may not copy/print well
