OVERVIEW

The Guiding Professional Success Mentoring Program (GPS) goes beyond traditional mentoring programs by offering students professional development in the form of meaningful mentoring relationships that will facilitate tangible networking and career connections. The goal of this program is to give Social Science students a viable and effective opportunity to develop a relationship with an employer, alumni, or community member who can support and guide them in preparing for their intended careers.

  • Develop insight and acquire the tools necessary to make informed career decisions
  • Determine whether your skills and interests match your career choices
  • Better understand and confirm your degree and/or career choice
  • Broaden your professional network
  • Overcome the apprehension you may have with speaking to professionals
  • Receive advice on job searching and interview skills
  • Learn from your Mentor’s experiences
  • Develop personal strengths and apply new and transferable skills
  • Establish a Mentor-Mentee partnership based on respect, confidentiality, and communication
  • Receive advice on personal growth and development and encourage you to learn about the professional world outside the classroom
REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
MENTEES MUST:
  • Be registered in the Faculty of Social Science and be in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Submit registration materials in person to Social Science Career Services (2040 SSC)
  • Be able to commit to one hour or so a month to the mentoring relationship
  • Attend an October training workshop; attendance is compulsory to participate in the GPS program
  • Please note that space is limited for participation in this program
SUPPORT

The Social Science Career Services Office will assist you with Skill Development Training during the mandatory workshop, will supply you with a GPS Mentoring Program Handbook, and will provide useful suggestions via periodic e-mails and are always available in person for consultation.

KEY DATES
  • September 1, 2011:  Registration begins
  • October 4, 2011:  Deadline for students to register for GPS by submitting the registration form in person to Social Science Career Services room 2040 SSC
